What is Courtroom & Classroom?

Courtroom & Classroom is an eight-page monthly newsletter designed for the social studies classroom. It serves as supplementary curriculum material for any teacher that would like to add a law component to their civics, government, political science or lower related classes. Each issue provides the teacher with timely coverage of four recent federal and state court cases.

How often is it published?

Courtroom & Classroom is published monthly during each school year.  An annual subscription consists of newsletters published September through May each year.

What is included in each issue?

Each issue provides the teacher with timely coverage of four recent federal and state court cases specifically designed for the social studies classroom. Each issue also contains a special teacher's page with suggested comments and discussion questions to aid him preparation and classroom use.  Each month, the teacher receives one copy of Courtroom & Classroom.  Permission is granted to reproduce the newsletter for use in the classroom.

Where do the cases come from?

Cases are selected from both state and federal courts from across the country.  Generally, four or five cases from the United States Supreme Court are covered each year.  The remainder of the cases are selected from the federal Courts of Appeals, federal district courts and state appellate court systems.

How do you select the cases?

One of the most challenging aspects of publishing Courtroom & Classroom is the selection of the cases.  In order to select appropriate cases, the Courtroom & Classroom editors do a lot of research, both online and in print.  There is no set curriculum in the selection of cases.  Cases are selected, first, to spark the student interest.  We strive to take cases that the students will find interesting to them.  Then, we try to include cases that will be valuable to the students in their education as young citizens.  The final criteria is that the cases be current.  No cases older than six months are included in any particular issue.

Who writes Courtroom & Classroom?

The Publisher of Courtroom & Classroom is John C. Smith.  John is a lawyer and was employed by West Publishing Co. for almost 20 years.  West was the largest and most prestigious legal publisher in the nation.  John served as an editor, Editorial Counsel and Publisher of West. In his years at West, John saw the need to educate students at the high school level about basic American legal principles and the workings of the American judicial system.

Working with John is a small contingent of a lawyer/writers also dedicated to providing this educational tool to high school educators.

Who should use Courtroom & Classroom?
